Dead Animal Inside a Building
Everything on this page hangs on a single distinction. Can somebody get hands on the animal using a way in that the building already has? Then it is work that gets booked. Does it require making a new way in? Then it is not, and finding that out now is better than finding it out with somebody standing in your hallway.
Spaces that qualify
An attic reached by hatch or pull-down stair. A crawl space with its own door, or a vent panel that lifts away. Garages, attached and detached alike. Basements, and Reading's older streets have plenty of the stone-walled sort. Barns, sheds and equipment buildings out in the townships. Porch and step voids, once the lattice has come away. A chimney, provided the animal sits inside arm's reach of an opening the flue already has.
The common thread is that nothing gets cut and nothing gets rebuilt afterward.
Where it stops
A mouse or a rat that died in the cavity between two finished wall surfaces, with no attic above it and no crawl space below giving any route across, is outside what this line books. Getting to it means a hole in your plaster and a repair after, which is a different trade. You will not be talked past that point here to keep a job on the books.
None of which means the smell has a schedule. It eases as the remains dry out, and how quickly depends on how big the animal was, what time of year it is, and how much air moves through that cavity. Working out where it is comes before spending anything on it.
Have these ready
- How the attic or crawl space opens, and roughly where
- The room it is strongest in, and whether that shifts through the day
- Noise overhead in the weeks before everything went quiet
- Any recent work on a soffit, vent or foundation gap
- Whether there is a light and an outlet in the space
The repair came first
A sequence worth recognizing: a soffit gets fixed or a vent gets capped, and the smell starts a week or two later. What happened is that the repair shut the only exit with something still on the wrong side of it. Where that matches your calendar, mention it, because it narrows the search to a few feet.
The material below
By the time anybody gets there, the insulation, nesting or dirt underneath is usually carrying more of the smell than the carcass is. Whether any of that is lifted out, and whether cleaning happens at all, is a question for the operator. It is not advertised here because it has not been verified here.
Or is it out in the open?
Out in the open, it is outdoor pickup. A deer has a page to itself, because weight changes everything. And if all you have is a smell with no location attached, start there rather than booking anybody.
